Job Description
[About Work on Climate] At Work on Climate, our mission goes beyond job matchmaking. We’re building a platform to propel meaningful climate action, concentrating on one of the most critical yet overlooked aspects—nurturing a robust climate work ecosystem.
Being a part of our volunteer team isn’t merely about being a member of a community. It’s an invitation to immerse yourself in real-world impact, to tackle pressing climate sub-problems that demand skilled minds to bridge the talent gap, essential for the climate-centric economy we envision.
[About the team] Simply put, the Research Impact team studies Work on Climate’s impact! Our team serves as the compass to guide Work on Climate’s programs, events, and initiatives to make climate work mainstream. Today, most of this team is located on the West Coast, USA. Weekly meetings will be determined based on volunteer ability but are typically held between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00pm EST or 8:30pm and 10:00pm EST.
[Role Summary] We are looking for an experienced, impact-focused researcher/analyst who feels at home both administering quantitative research methodologies (especially surveys) and analyzing the results.
⏰ Time commitment 5 hours/week consistently for the next 3-6 months (or longer!).
🎁 What’s in it for me? In order to truly address climate change at scale, Work on Climate’s Impact Research Team needs to consistently produce high-quality findings that enable our volunteers to make the most impact possible. As a Researcher (Quant), you will play a critical role in measuring our impact through rigorous research and making key recommendations to increase our impact.
This means that you’ll gain the following:
Gain experience applying your researching skills to climate-specific work Getting to stretch your skills and try out the best and latest research methods Collaborate with top-notch teammates passionate about climate Build a strong climate network in your area of interest A great line on your resume! Employers know and respect us.
🛠️ What will I do? Simply put, you will lead the scientific measurement of Work on Climate’s impact.
This will look like:
Collaborate with teams to understand the ways that Work on Climate can impact the wider world Conduct and analyze quantitative research to measure Work on Climate’s Impact (bonus points if you can automate this step!) Communicate this research so others understand our impact and can improve their programs to increase impact
✅ What skills and commitment do I need? The most effective candidates will have:
3+ years of experience conducting quant research, ideally in a setting with human subjects (e.g. polling, surveys, A/B testing, etc.) 3+ years analyzing quant research data, ideally in a programming language like Python or R or in a BI tool like Tableau or Qlik 3+ years of experience communicating research findings to a range of audiences Dependability. The natural tendency in volunteer projects is for things to slip through the cracks, the buck will stop at you. Excellent individual and group communication skills, with the ability to work with people of different work and communication styles Impact-mindset, or someone whose mission is to maximize positive impact, stay focused on the outcome, and doesn’t hesitate to roll up their sleeves to make it happen.
🤔 Common Challenges Volunteer projects and initiatives move slowly because we can only contribute ~5 per week. Researchers will need to account for this in their research timelines. Researchers will need to address ambiguity. They’ll be swimming in a lot of uncertainty and will need to ask the right questions in order to drive maximum impact.
✋🏽 I’m interested! What do I do? Yay! We’re excited to learn more about you. Please fill out this application form to tell us about your skills and interests in volunteering with our awesome team. It would be most helpful if you submit a portfolio showing your previous research/data analytics experience in addition to your resume/CV! If you are selected for an interview, our team will be in touch in 1-2 weeks.
