I&C Non-Safety Senior Lead Engineer

TerraPower, LLC is seeking a highly motivated I&C Design Engineer for the Senior Lead Engineer role in the non-safety instrumentation and controls group. This position reports directly to the Non-Safety I&C Manager. In this role, you will act as an I&C engineering team member for Sodium Fast Reactor technologies, including responsibility for the instrument and control system design, prototype development and testing, plant level system integration, and commissioning. Your role will include interfacing with a team of scientists and engineers internal and external to TerraPower. You will also identify, specify, and integrate custom instrumentation with advanced control systems for Generation IV advanced nuclear reactor technologies.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for interfacing and supporting geographically diverse and international design team members to develop supporting design documentation. The design team members include in-house and subcontracted resources and may include partner/customer resources as well.

• Support engineering and review of instrumentation and controls scope for use in sodium fast reactor and integrated energy storage technologies.

• Oversee Lead Designers of I&C and supporting electrical systems from systems and sub-system functional requirements through final design.

• Support development of departmental strategic planning for non-safety I&C work scope

• Support planning in Primavera P6 including L2-L3-L4 schedule milestone and task decomposition and budget and schedule planning.

• Support the implementation of an integrated control system comprised of Curtiss Wright RTIME HSI components and RTP controllers.

• Provide oversight, instruction, and mentoring on development of PI&Ds, control system architecture drawings, control logic and loop diagrams, instrument installation drawings, and other engineering deliverables.

• Assist in development and review of system and component-level I&C detailed design deliverables as required.

• Perform engineering and design evaluations in the application of nuclear codes and standards, licensing requirements, and NRC regulations.

• Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers in applicable nuclear and non-nuclear related design standards.

• Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects, working with the contract administrator to ensure delivery of data and other deliverables to meet TerraPower requirements, as well as coordination and performance of technical reviews of deliverables.

• Support continuous learning and application of nuclear industry best practices in order to maintain the highest quality of engineering design and proactively identify process change/enhancement opportunities.

• Integrate I&C with work of other disciplines, engineers, scientists, and subject matter experts.

• Interface with and support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports.

Key Qualifications and Skills

• B.S. or higher in Controls, Electrical, or related discipline from an accredited university and 15+ years direct experience with proven instrumentation and controls systems skills. Higher education will count toward years of experience.

• Candidates must have experience in the following areas of application:

o Instrumentation and controls experience with design development, testing, commissioning, or diagnostics on a commercially available distributed control system platform.

o Managing, supervising, or leading projects or work scope delivering design for industrial I&C platforms.

o Familiarity with RTIME PPC systems (Curtiss Wright) or RTP I/O and controllers (RTP Corp).

o Familiarity working with IEEE and IEC standards that support I&C.

o Familiarity working with and/or developing industrial process flow diagrams (PFD) or piping & instrument diagrams (P&ID).

o Familiarity working with and/or developing control narratives and logic diagrams.

• Experience or familiarity desired but not required in the following areas of application:

o Nuclear reactor safety systems, controls, or nuclear instrumentation systems.

o Implementing design control and development in accordance with nuclear power plant quality assurance (e.g. 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, ASME NQA-1).

o Experience designing and operating high-temperature (400°C and higher) processes.

• Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.

• Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.

• Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.

• Candidate must be a self-starter and possess ability to coordinate and lead a design team’s effort with minimal direction.

• Ability to work on multiple simultaneous tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach.

• The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork. Will actively support the TerraPower guiding principles.

• Actual position starting level and will be determined based on assessment of qualifications.

Job Details

Salary Range Level 12: $163,702 - $226,844

Salary Range Level 13: $187,088 - $289,401

*Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 – 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary band. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected individual’s qualifications and experience. This range is specific to Washington State.
