Founded by engineers and cycling enthusiasts Oliver Montague and Dmitro Khroma, Swytch is a close-knit team dedicated to creating low carbon transport solutions which are fun to use and good for the planet and our customers. Our office is based in an old biscuit factory in Hackney Wick, East London. We have a fully functional workshop where the innovation and new product proposals come to life.​

The role​

Senior Product Design Engineer (Contract) is responsible for the conceptualisation, design, build, verification, and validation of new products whilst collaborating with industrial designers, the technical team in China, and other business functions, to ensure a consumer-focused, viable and validated product is scalable for production at the agreed specification, and in a timely manner.​

This role has a large focus on 2D/3D file ownership and would be an ideal fit for a technical-minded self-starting individual contributor. An ideal candidate would have an effective ability to interact within multiple areas of the business at all levels.​

The contract is for 3-6 months. We require at least 3 days support per week but can be 5 days a week (Monday to Friday) as well. We require 3 days in office per week, the rest can be working from home if desired.

Responsibilities​

Self-sufficient, confident and capable​

  • You will be the most experienced mechanical engineer in the team. Your previous experience of developing and shipping multiple electro-mechanical consumer products gives you the confidence to make critical design decisions quickly. You’re familiar with a wide range of industrial manufacturing processes. You will quickly become the resident expert in our mechanical eBike system.

Full Mechanical Design ownership of our entire system​

  • Release-level SolidWorks CAE/CAD capability – you will do the final reviews before release.​
  • You will take ownership of our PDM database, ensuring new designs are digitally synchronized

Full Product Development ownership from concept to mass-manufacture (NPD, NPI)​

  • Fully versed in knowing and utilizing design tools. You can lay out a pragmatic project timeline for yourself and know which tools to use along the way.​
  • Requirements, Specifications, cBOM, RFP, RFQ, FEA, Design Release/Freeze, Workshops, dFMEA, Prototype, Integration, Verification, Validation, Testing, Risk Management, etc.​

Clear, Concise Communicator​

  • You communicate effectively across the business, from peers to non-technical leaders and junior engineers. You cater your level of technical complexity for every context.​
  • You communicate effectively externally to our Far-East Manufacturing Partners, online, conveying complex technical detail succinctly without confusion or mistake. ​
  • Confident with every medium of technical communication, especially visual through PowerPoint and Sketching. ​

Hands-on prototyping​

  • Confident using a wide range of prototyping techniques to assemble electro-mechanical prototypes in-house for validation testing.​

Requirements

Educated to a minimum of BEng/BSc level or equivalent in Product Design/Mechanical Engineering discipline and relevant experience​

+5 years experience in a relevant industry

Demonstrable experience to conceptualise, design, build, test, validate and ship a variety of consumer electronic products​

Advanced experience and understanding of 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) and PDM/ PLM Systems. Ability to do parametric modelling and keep the feature tree clean. Ability to design and build complex mechanisms. Ability to create and release 2D drawings.​

Demonstrable experience designing injection moulded components, and a familiarity with the ​various relevant design and development stages therein​

Knowledge and experience of New Product Development & Introduction (NPD & NPI) ​

Demonstrable experience of prototyping techniques (releasing parts for 3D printing, CNC, manual machining and hacking; assembling etc.)​
