Job Description
About Us Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is a joint venture between two industry leaders with a clear vision for automotive’s next chapter. From operating systems to zonal controllers to cloud and connectivity solutions, we’re addressing the challenges of electric vehicles through technology that will set the standards for software-defined vehicles around the world. The road to the future is uncharted. By combining our expertise across connectivity, AI, security and more, we’ll map a new way forward. Working together, we’ll create a future that’s more connected, more intelligent, more sustainable for everyone. Role Summary The Diagnostics Team’s mission is to be the industry trailblazer in ZEV diagnostics leveraging our smart vehicle ecosystem to delight our customers as they fearlessly (and faultlessly) enjoy their next adventure. We achieve our mission by developing the most advanced integrated diagnostics system in the world, capable of proactively monitoring, analyzing, and learning from our fleets throughout their lifecycle. This role is a critical piece of our overall success. The Diagnostic Calibration Engineer is responsible for the calibration of the onboard diagnostic system to ensure a seamless in-vehicle experience, and robust ability to reliably and expeditiously detect faults. Responsibilities Responsible for calibration of the onboard vehicle diagnostic system to ensure a harmonized implementation across the entire vehicle, as well as any enhanced diagnostic features requiring calibration. Work with the relevant OBD System Development Engineer in fault detection mechanism identification for the relevant diagnostic monitor, providing expertise and support in characterization and throughout early software development. For each diagnostic monitor, perform necessary system analysis to identify noise factors, operating modes, and other use cases to perform all required system and component characterization, build out a robust design of experiment, and ultimately build out a complete calibration plan. Document resultant calibration guides that have been built out to ensure accurate fault detection that is robust against false passes and false indication of malfunction. Work with the Diagnostic System Test and Integration team in diagnostic monitor development and integration. Carry out calibration activities for the diagnostic system across the vehicle including calibration of diagnostic monitors, fault code storage and data management system, and, when applicable, enhanced diagnostics such as routine controls. Support all necessary environmental testing in the full calibration of the diagnostic system. Author calibration reports upon completion of a project in order to document the approach, data, results, and analysis on opportunities for future improvement. Identify, source, commission, and upkeep all tools required to perform calibration activities, synergizing with the Diagnostic System Test and Integration Team as possible. Seek unique methods to automate and increase efficiency of calibration activities, and work with the Diagnostic Automation Team to realize these. Identify, document, and aid in the root causing and fixing of bugs encountered while calibrating. Work with the Diagnostic System Test and Integration Team to assess results of reliability testing and in-use performance evaluation of the diagnostic system, and seek calibration improvements based on this data. Qualifications BS in Engineering (preferably Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Software related discipline). 4+ years of experience in diagnostic calibration role (level negotiable based on experience). Experience in OBD II. Technical understanding of electrical vehicle architecture. Hands-on working capability with electromechanical (vehicle) systems.
