Job Description

About Redwood Materials

Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 to create a circular supply chain for electric vehicles and clean energy products, making them more sustainable and driving down the cost for batteries. We’re doing this by developing and deploying new technologies to increase the scope and scale of recycled and sustainable materials in the global battery supply chain.

Controls Engineer, New Products

Essential Duties:

As the first Controls Engineer on a new engineering team, you will take a hands-on role in the design, development, and integration of a new product at Redwood.

While battery algorithms are a core focus, this role will also serve as the technical lead across all control systems for the product. We are looking for someone with strong control system fundamentals who has experience developing battery algorithms from scratch or as part of a small team.

The ideal candidate is highly self-driven, adaptable to a startup environment, and eager to tackle novel technical challenges. If you're excited about working in a dynamic, fast-paced setting within a new department at Redwood, we want to hear from you!

If necessary, the job level will be adjusted to suit the applicant’s experience and responsibilities.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop control architectures and algorithms across multiple layers of power converters.
  • Lead thermal control strategies for the system.
  • Conduct system identification and modeling, determining the appropriate level of model fidelity and designing experiments for data collection and parameter estimation.
  • Collaborate with embedded firmware engineers to ensure algorithm implementation in resource-constrained real-time environments.

Desired Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with 5+ years of model development or systems engineering experience.
  • Strong first-principles understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy storage, and thermal mechanics.
  • Solid foundation in classical and modern control theory (stability, controllability, observability).
  • Expertise in Li-ion battery estimation, including SOC/SOH modeling, Coulomb counting, and Kalman filters (EKF).
  • Hands-on experience designing and tuning PID controllers and working with frequency-domain analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and testable engineering requirements.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards

Working Conditions:

  • Environment, such as office or outdoors.
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time.
  • Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing.
  • Occasional work weekends, nights, or be on-call as a regular part of the job.
  • Occasional travel requirements.
