Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.
Job Summary
Kairos Power is currently seeking a Nuclear Shielding Engineer to join our Nuclear Design and Methods team and assist in the design and construction of our Gen IV test reactor, Hermes. As we work towards achieving first criticality by 2027, we are searching for a highly motivated individual who is eager to make a tangible impact in the world. As a member of the Nuclear Design and Methods team, you will play an integral role in the development of Hermes, contributing to a historical milestone and working alongside a team of skilled professionals. The ideal candidate will share our passion for improving people's quality of life through the development and deployment of advanced reactors. We are looking for someone with a strong technical foundation in neutronics, radiation transport and shielding analysis, and who possesses a natural inclination towards innovation.
Responsibilities
- Utilize specialized tools (MCNP and Attila) and your experience to perform complex calculations essential for supporting informed discussions and decision-making regarding radiation shielding
- Develop radiation source terms based on material activation
- Explore sensitivity studies for shielding improvements balancing cost, feasibility, and efficacy
- Support the execution of team goals for producing high quality shielding design products for a novel facility
- Convey technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences and ensure a clear understanding of radiation shielding concepts and requirements throughout the organization
- Record and document technical work products for the benefit of the community, knowledge transfer, and archival purposes
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of demonstrated experience with radiation transport analysis or similar experience
- 2+ years of demonstrated shielding design with facilities, e.g. medical, accelerator, nuclear power is preferred
- 2+ years of demonstrated experience working in a nuclear facility with radiation sources is preferred
- Experienced with MCNPX/5/6 and variance reduction methods
- Experienced with CAD and the development of geometrical meshes
- Experienced with modeling and simulation environments, e.g. clusters, distributed computing, HPC
- Knowledge of sources of radioactive decay related to a nuclear power setting
- Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
- Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others
- Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
- Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues

- Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes
Travel
- Some travel may be required (up to 10%)

The salary range for this position is $101,300 to $119,100 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California.
