Job Description
The Scientist, Mechanical Engineering position will be responsible for the design and execution of various engineering efforts to systematically build devices and related integrated or modular systems that directly enable animal gestational support. The successful candidate will be part of the Hardware and Engineering team that will design, produce, test, and productize novel devices and systems at the forefront of Colossal’s species conservation and de-extinction efforts. They will be part of an interdisciplinary development team and collaborate with other engineering and biology colleagues as well as with external vendors and collaborators. This position reports to the Manager of Hardware and Engineering.
**This position is in Dallas TX, with minimal periodic (<10%) travel anticipated. ** Relocation assistance is available.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support the ExoDev team as a subject matter expert in designing bioengineered and mechanical devices and systems to solve complex engineering challenges related to enabling or advancing ex-vivo gestation.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to identify and translate biological requirements into functional requirements and specifications for devices, constructs, and systems.
- Leverage engineering principles and expertise to inform the development and generation of innovative device concepts that address project goals and technical challenges.
- Capture and document design intent through precise, manufacturable drawings and schematics, utilizing GD&T and identifying Critical to Quality (CTQ) features as necessary.
- Independently lead and conduct research and development activities including literature review, idea generation, experimental design, prototyping, experimentation, analysis, testing, and validation.
- Clearly and effectively convey ideas and actions through written, verbal, and visual presentations.
Skills/Abilities:
- Technical areas of experience that are required:
- Mechanics, fluid mechanics, microfluidics, design of experiments, prototyping, statistical analysis
- Technical areas of experience that are preferred:
- Control systems, biomaterials, medical device design, sensors, thermodynamics, material science, biocompatibility, simulation
- High degree of comfort in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment, particularly with a de-risking and highly iterative approach to device development
- Strong organizational and analytical skills, with a focus on root cause analysis and effective problem-solving
- Driven and proactive, with the ability to independently and collaboratively lead and manage projects to completion.
Required Education and Experience:
- 5+ years of post-graduate industry or highly applied experience developing medical devices, diagnostics, microsystems, or other mechanical systems preferably in research & development engineering is required.
- A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree from an ABET-accredited program in an engineering-related field such as mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or biomaterials is required.
