Job Description

About Rivian Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract. As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations. Role Summary Internship Term: Rivian internships are experiences optimized for student candidates. To be eligible, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited program during the internship term with an expected graduation date between December2025 to December 2027. If you are not pursuing a degree, please see our full time positions on our Rivian careers site. Note that if your university has specific requirements for internship programs, it is your responsibility to fulfill those requirements. You’ll play an essential role in developing vehicle trajectory planning systems that control where and how fast the vehicle travels, based on lane geometry, sensor inputs, map data, and vehicle tracking. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to critical ADAS functions like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Highway Assist, providing real-world experience in advanced motion planning and control theory. This role is ideal for graduate-level candidates in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields, with an interest in applying AI and ML to motion planning. Responsibilities Trajectory Planning: Develop and refine algorithms to determine vehicle trajectories, incorporating data from sensors, lane geometry, map information, and vehicle tracking. Control System Collaboration: Work closely with control systems to ensure smooth operation of ADAS features such as ACC and Highway Assist. Data-Driven Planning: Apply data-driven AI and ML techniques to optimize motion planning and improve system responsiveness. Algorithm Optimization: Assist in optimizing motion planning algorithms for performance and reliability, publishing trajectories in real-time environments. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with software, sensor, and mapping teams to enhance vehicle performance through precise motion planning. Qualifications Currently pursuing or completed a Master’s or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; publications in motion planning, control theory, or ADAS-related topics are a plus. Strong proficiency in C++ preferred; prior industry experience is a plus. Knowledge in motion planning, control theory, and AI/ML applications within motion planning contexts. Experience with data-driven AI and ML techniques, particularly in planning or control theory applications. Demonstrated ability to analyze complex systems and optimize algorithms for vehicle performance. Effective communication and teamwork abilities, with experience working in cross-disciplinary environments. 40 hours/week, full-time #LI-[SAI7] Pay Disclosure Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Internships: The range of pay for internships is 25.00-51.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on location, and other factors permitted by law.
