What we’re looking for:

The Lead Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, installing, and testing automation systems that bring together multiple sub-systems to meet the operational and regulatory needs for PV and BESS projects. This role requires an experience in controls system architecture for electrical infrastructure up to 35kV, including in-depth knowledge and expertise in SCADA, protective relaying, and automation in SEL products such as SELRTAC, SEL3350 or SEL3530. This role will work closely with the Grid Integration Engineering and Design Engineering teams as well as the Nexamp Energy Storage Team and Nexamp Asset Management. The Lead Controls Engineer will report to the Director, Commissioning.

What you’ll do:

  • Plan, design, program and implement PLC/HMI based control systems, primarily using SEL RTAC and AVEVA Perspective
  • Write structured, well-documented, bug-free PLC code in IEC_61131-3 & pointers in C or C++ language.
  • Manage Github & CodeSys libraires used in RTAC SEL3530, SEL3505 & SEL3350 for Solar PV and BESS assets
  • Lead BMS, EMS, DAS, and SCADA system designs for PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and hybrid PV+BESS systems in both DC-Coupled and AC-Coupled architectures
  • Participate in points checkout with Utility, perform Capacity testing for PV and BESS projects. Ensure smooth integration of each project’s SCADA/comms into the Central SCADA system operated by Operation team (NAMS)
  • Develop and improve future/existing SCADA Communication drawing template
  • Manage outside storage integrators (TESLA, BYD, SunGrow & CATL-LQ) and monitoring platform providers to specify and configure SCADA, Power Plant Controller, RTU, and IT equipment
  • Process and interpret SCADA requirements of different markets, local utility requirements, ISO/ ISO compliance requirements for telemetry and controls hardware and software and coordinate the procurement and installation of necessary telecom services.
  • Develop Control logic for active Power Curtailment, Frequency regulation (FR) logic and other ancillary services as needed by PV and Storage resources.
  • Develop and review system designs, and communication interfaces to utility, customer’s Energy Management Systems, Nexamp’s monitoring and control systems, or energy trading platforms
  • Define project commissioning and controls requirements and manage scopes of work for 3rd party commissioning engineers to ensure project controls solutions satisfy the required applications
  • Participate in new product research and implementation.
  • Provide remote SCADA support as needed for the lifecycle of the projects.

What you’ll bring:

  • 7+ years of experience in SCADA and controls system design in Renewable sector such as Solar, Wind and Storage
  • 5+ years of IEC 61131-3 PLC programming experience.
  • 2+ years of C/C++ programming experienced (Strong knowledge of pointers in C)
  • Proficient in MW Curtailment and Charge/Discharge schemes for BESS, AVR (Volt-Var, PF, MVAR, etc.), Frequency Response, PV-BESS Hybrid controls.
  • Knowledge and experience with technical communications protocols (Modbus/TCP, DNP3.0, etc.), commonly used controls software/hardware platforms, and communication standards (MESA, Sunspec, etc.)
  • Working knowledge and hands-on experience with various relays, meters, SCADA Gateways, and Data Concentrators, including programming of RTACs
  • Expertise in commissioning and resolving site technical issues, proven success in independently troubleshooting challenging SCADA related technical issues
  • Experience managing contractors, resolving scheduling conflicts with key stakeholders, and managing internal and external resources
  • Ability to work as part of a fast paced, multi-disciplinary team and manage multiple projects simultaneously
