Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

SPARC Diagnostic Systems Engineers focus on the implementation of CFS Systems Engineering process and systems thinking to the plasma diagnostics that will be used in the real-time control of SPARC, optimize its day-to-day operation and be used to investigate burning plasma physics to inform the design of ARC. This role is inherently cross-disciplinary, and requires collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders, both inside CFS and with science teams around the world, to ensure that systems are designed, integrated, and operated successfully.

The SPARC Diagnostics Team has a wide variety of backgrounds and includes collaborations with fusion community teams around the world. This role is expected to work with the Responsible Officers and Engineers as the matrixed Systems Engineer to find the most effective and added value approaches to delivering SPARC relevant work products, processes, and toolsets while remaining cognizant and respectful of relevant decision authorities and their associated scope.

While this role will spend a portion of its time supporting final design reviews of plasma diagnostics, it is also expected that this Systems Engineer will be a cross-functional facilitator, developing and implementing stakeholder aligned solutions as we complete late-stage design, fabrication, and assembly. While this role focuses on a number of fusion-specific technologies, we welcome and encourage applicants from all technical backgrounds to join our diverse team.
